Networking: Be Ready To Sell at Any Time

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007 by Susan Cort

You’re standing on line at the grocery store, at the soccer field or even at a wedding reception and someone says, “So, what do you for a living?”

Do you stutter and stammer because you’re out of your work environment and the person caught you off guard or seize the moment as a great opportunity to market your company and yourself?

Obviously, you’ve got to be prepared, that even during non-work time and in unusual locations, you may be able to sell your company’s services. And, just don’t wait for people to engage you. Look for opportunitites to bring your company into the conversation.

If you don’t have one already, you need practice your elevator speech. In other words, if you had a few floors of an elevator ride with someone, how would you present yourself and your company in a concise and engaging way? Who are you, what to you do and how can your company help this person?

Then, look for opportunities to talk about your company in conversation. You’d be surprised how much business begins on the soccer field.
